Most "best Korean skincare" lists are the same twelve products in a different order, written by someone who has never had to explain to a customer why their sunscreen pilled under foundation. This one is written by a shop in West Yorkshire that holds the stock, so where something is overhyped we will say so.
Start with sun protection, because it is the only step with unambiguous evidence behind it
If you buy one Korean skincare product, buy the sunscreen. Not because K-beauty invented sun protection, but because Korean formulators solved the texture problem years before Western brands took it seriously. The reason people who "can't stand sunscreen" suddenly wear it daily is almost always that they switched to a Korean one.
You will see two numbers on the packaging. SPF measures protection against UVB, the rays that burn. The PA rating measures UVA, the rays associated with ageing and pigmentation, and it is worth understanding because the plus signs are not decorative. The system came out of Japan and is built on a test called Persistent Pigment Darkening. PA+ corresponds to a PPD of 2 to 4, PA++ to 4 to 8, PA+++ to 8 to 16, and PA++++ to 16 or higher. Note the "or higher": there is no way for a shopper to tell whether a PA++++ product sits at 16 or 40, so treat 16 as the floor.
The part most K-beauty shops leave out
In 2021 the founder of INCIDecoder sent a very popular Korean sunscreen, Purito's Centella Green Level Unscented Sun SPF50+, to European laboratories. Both in-vivo and in-vitro testing put its real SPF at 19, against a claimed 50+. Other brands came under scrutiny in the aftermath, and Keep Cool suspended sales of one product after admitting the labelled figure was higher than the reality.
It is worth knowing why this happens, because it is not simply fraud. Sunscreen is regulated as a "functional cosmetic" in South Korea, with independent lab results submitted to the Korean FDA, while the EU uses the in-vivo ISO 24444 method. Different volunteers, different skin types, different equipment, and the same bottle can produce meaningfully different numbers. That is uncomfortable if you want a single certainty, but it is the honest position.
What we take from it: buy sun care from brands with a long track record rather than whichever bottle is going viral, and apply the amount the instructions actually specify. An SPF50 applied thinly performs closer to an SPF15 regardless of whose lab tested it.
The two we sell most of are both from Beauty of Joseon. The Relief Sun: Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 is the lighter of the pair and outsells everything else in the shop by a wide margin, which we suspect says more about British skin disliking heavy textures than about anything else. Snail mucin: what the evidence actually supports
This is the ingredient everyone asks about, usually with a slightly appalled expression. Snail secretion filtrate contains hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and allantoin, along with collagen, elastin, peptides, antioxidants and glycoproteins. That is a genuinely useful combination on paper.
The research supports hydration, reduced transepidermal water loss, some smoothing of texture, faster wound healing and reduced irritation. But the honest summary is that more robust clinical trials are needed, and most of what exists is systematic review work rather than large randomised trials. So: a good, well-tolerated hydrator with reasonable evidence behind it, not the miracle TikTok suggests.

Centella, for skin that has had enough
Centella asiatica, often shortened to cica, is the ingredient Korean formulators reach for when skin is red, reactive or recovering from something. It turns up in almost every category rather than in a single hero product, which tells you something about how the industry regards it.

Toners are not what British shoppers think they are
If your idea of a toner was formed in the 1990s, it involves alcohol and a stinging sensation. A Korean toner does the opposite job. It goes onto damp skin straight after cleansing to rehydrate and prepare for whatever comes next, and most contain no exfoliating acid at all.
Rice toners are the entry point most people take. The double cleanse is one of the few routine steps that earns its place
Two steps: an oil cleanser to dissolve sunscreen, makeup and sebum, then a low-pH water-based cleanser for what remains. The reason it matters is narrow and specific. Sunscreen is designed to resist water. A foaming face wash will not shift it properly, and residual SPF sitting on skin overnight is a common cause of congestion in people who cannot work out why their skin got worse after they started wearing SPF daily.

Moisturiser: pick for texture, not for the label on the front
The single most common mistake we see is people buying a moisturiser rated for their skin type and hating it because of how it feels. Skin type matters less than climate and layering. If you already use a hydrating toner and an essence, a rich cream on top will feel suffocating no matter how dry your skin is in theory.

The brands worth knowing

Ignore the ten-step routine
The ten-step routine is a marketing artefact that escaped into the wild around 2015 and has been quietly embarrassing the industry ever since. Very few Korean people do ten steps. Here is a version that works:
Morning: rinse or gentle cleanse, toner, sunscreen. That is it. Add a serum if you have a specific concern.
Evening: oil cleanse if you wore SPF or makeup, gentle cleanser, toner, one active, moisturiser.
Buy the sunscreen first. Add one thing at a time, and give each addition two weeks before you judge it. Skincare that changes every fortnight tells you nothing about what is working.
